Planit Sefton
Background
The
SBP
received 2 Planit-
NW
workshops in
July and September 2004 as part of the regional project funded by
NW Regional Assembly, NW Development Agency, Government Office for
North West and Health Development Agency. The workshops were
designed to raise awareness about sustainable development but
additionally they were an excellent resource for team working,
problem solving and collaboration. The workshops were so successful
that in 2005 the SBP commissioned a version of Planit-NW, tailored
for Sefton. The licence was for 2 years and sessions were open to
all partners.
Planit-Sefton works in the same
way as Planit-NW but is linked to the targets set out in Sefton’s
Community Strategy.
Objectives
- to raise awareness of sustainable development and commit
actions to support the principles of sustainable development
- to increase the understanding of the Community Strategy and the
value of partners’ and individuals’ contribution to its
success
- to continue to develop effective partnership working
How does it work?
This computer based learning simulation works by using
buildings that represent key areas of any city with the object of
the simulation being to develop a sustainable city over a period of
time. The game works with a minimum team of 16 and maximum team of
24. All the buildings have a mission statement, budgets and a list
of items that they can purchase. With each purchase inputted
a score is awarded and the interactive screen will then change to
show if the building strategy helps to achieve
sustainability. However, as in real life you cannot just go
out and buy what you like you have to work in partnership with the
other buildings to achieve sustainable development. The training
has been designed so that anybody can take part, you don’t need to
have any specialist knowledge, all you need is an open mind and
want to improve your community.
What has been the response so far?
The learning simulation is a fun way to get a complex message
across. Feedback includes the Chief Executive of Sefton
Council, Graham Haywood, “It is a very good exercise in
encouraging cross-dept. working and it was enjoyable without being
overly competitive” and Sefton Council's Regeneration &
Environmental Services Strategic Director, Alan Moore “[he]
found the Planit experience extremely enjoyable, informative and a
very useful tool”.
